CHRISTMAS AND CHRISTMAS TREES
Kids love Christmas in the Keys because it's different. What's different is the warm weather and climate, but many of the customs are the same. Most folks have a tree of pine, spruce or fir. You'll even see Charlie Brown type trees. In the Keys some folks decorate corn plants, Norfolk Pines or palm trees with tropical fish lights and seashells. Below are two places to take the family to during the Christmas hiolidays. The first has traditional trees from around the world and is educational. The second is purely the Keys

Upside Down Christmas Tree - Key Largo Lodge, bayside- Take the kids to see the tree hanging from the ceiling with ornaments, tinsel and blinking lights. This inverted Christmas tree began about 20 years ago and was conceived by the lodge's proprietor, Harriet "Hat" Stokes. An account in local newspaper states that one year Harriet Stokes erected the tree in the more customary point up position, but since everyone seem to be disappointed the tree was returned to the ceiling.

December - celebrate an old fashioned Christmas on Lignumvitae Key at the historic Matheson House hosted by the Friends of Islamorada. Decorated in traditional keys style $10 donation includes boat ride to the island and house and hardwood hanmmock tour plus Christmas treats.
Annual Christmas Tree Sale - The Marathon Lion's Club begins its annual tree sale November in the Winn-Dixie Plaza in Marathon. Earnings to help residents of Marathon in need of eyecare.

Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department - Christmas caroling route, check with Department on route, Santa on truck and candy for kids along the way.
Operation Christmas Child - The Island Community Church is the main collection center for Monroe County. Residents can send shoe boxes filled with toys and essential items to children around the world living in crisis areas through Operation Christmas Child. Small toys, supplies for school, and basic hygiene items which can be fit into a shoe box are to collected at Island Community Church. Call 305-667-7303 or 800-123-4567 for information.
Toys for Tots Run - The annual Toys for Tots Run organized by ABATE ( American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) begins in late November each year. Toy donations ( new and unwrapped ) for children age 1 to 10 will go to kids at the Wesley House Child Care Ce3nter, Grace Jones Care and the Florida Keys Children Shelter. Collection Centers for toys are all Florida Keys fire stations, Marathon American Legion, and US1Radio in Big Pine. Information on the Toys for Tots Run call 305-872-2341 or 305-289-4383
